8 Common Questions About Hospice Care

Who can receive hospice care?

Hospice care is appropriate if your doctor or the hospice medical director certify that you have a life-limiting illness.   Hospice care provides comfort and support for patients with all types of illnesses including cancer, heart, lung, vascular, kidney and neuromuscular diseases, etc. If you feel that you or a loved one may benefit from hospice care, call us and a member of our experienced staff can work with you and your physician to determine if hospice care is right for you.

Who pays for hospice care?

Hospice related care is covered 100% by Medicare, Med Advantage Plans, Medicaid and most private insurance plans. The hospice benefit is comprehensive which means that all services, medications and equipment related to the patient’s hospice diagnosis are covered. This can save patients and families a tremendous amount of money in co-pays and direct expenses.

Is hospice care only for the last days or weeks of life?

Hospice patients can continue receiving care as long as they meet the guidelines for hospice care. Hospice care is intended for people with 6 months or less to live if the disease runs its normal course. If a patient lives longer than 6 months, they can still receive hospice care, as long as the hospice medical director or the patient’s doctor re-certifies that the patient still qualifies for hospice.

Do I have to always stay home to receive hospice care?

No. You can participate in as many activities as you desire and as your health allows.

Can I choose my own hospice company?

You and your loved ones have the final decision which hospice company you choose.  Some hospitals, doctors, discharge planners and others may make it seem you do not have a choice as to which hospice company you sign with. Choose the company which best meets the needs of you and your loved ones.

Can I change what hospice company I am currently on?
